Chinese employees are 'forced to crawl' in public as punishment

Footage of a dozen workers at a karaoke bar crawling on the floor 수원셔츠룸 in a queue has gone viral in China.

The staff are seen in the bizarre video getting on all fours while chanting slogans at the entertainment venue in north-eastern China’s Jilin Province.

They were being disciplined after failing to hit their sales target, a company spokesperson said, adding that the employees had voluntarily accepted the punishment.

The scene was spotted on Wednesday at the Sheng Shi Hua Ting KTV, a karaoke bar in the city of Liaoyuan, according to reports.

In the footage obtained by , a queue of black-suited workers is seen crawling around the venue’s lobby.

A man can be heard shouting a slogan: ‘Come on, brothers. When brothers are of the same mind.’

The group on the floor replied: 인계동셔츠룸 ‘They can cut through gold with sharpness.’

A staff member confirmed the incident to the Chinese media, 인계동셔츠룸 saying that the employees were being punished after failing to hit the sales targets set by the company.

They insisted that the workers had ‘voluntarily accepted’ the punishment.

According to China’s employment contract law, employers are not allowed to humiliate and give corporal punishment to workers. Furthermore, the employer shall be liable for compensation if any harm is done to the worker.  

Nevertheless, many Chinese companies have used extreme or bizarre measures to discipline their employees, from slapping themselves to eating live worms.

In October, a company in southern Chinese city Dongguan was reported to have forced its workers to repeatedly slap themselves to ‘build their resilience’.

Another firm made employees gobble down live earthworms as punishment after failing to achieve their sales goals in Guizhou Province, south-western China, earlier this year.

But some firms have been caught shooting and releasing such videos deliberately to boost their publicity.

In 2019, workers from a company in Tengzhou were seen being ‘forced’ to crawl on the street. It was claimed at the time that the employees had not been able to reach their sales target.

The video sparked an outcry but later turned out to be a PR show.
